There is no vacuum in the spiritual. No matter how great a vessel is, when it is no longer fit for the use it has to be replaced especially one that is used in a place of glory. You don’t offer your guests food from a cracked plate. In the Bible reading today, while Samuel was still grieving for Saul’s failed assignment, God asked him to go and anoint someone else. While Saul was physically still on the throne, the spirit of God that empowered him to be the glorious king of Isreal had departed. So while he was still the people’s choice which beclouded his judgement earlier, he was powerless in spiritual authority. This would ultimately manifest in the physical to the extent that the same people would compare him to David the new anointed even when he did not yet have the crown. The anointing and associated indwelling of the spirit is critical to any assignment. Are you still anointed for that assignment?
